Reporters had badges confiscated Saturday after the president’s Friday order citing ‘fake news.’

The capitol as it stood last winter.

Journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico were turned away from the White House on Saturday and had their credentials confiscated, enforcing President Trump’s abrupt ban announced the day before.

The president said the outlets report “FICTION and LIES” and that he need not admit them to “the people’s house.” Outlets called the move an illegal assault on First Amendment rights and vowed legal challenges.

CNN said its mission to report on the government would continue regardless of physical restrictions. MS NOW pledged to defend independent journalism. The ban caught some administration aides off guard.

First Amendment experts said the action was unlikely to survive court review. Rival networks discussed how to handle pool coverage if the exclusion holds. It remained unclear how far the prohibition would extend beyond the grounds.
