U.S., Denmark Reach Greenland Security Deal After Annexation Threats
Trump claims permanent control over security needs; Copenhagen stresses sovereignty remains intact.
President Trump announced Friday that the United States had reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland granting Washington permanent control over security and related needs on the Arctic island.
The deal, expected to be signed next week at the United Nations, allows expanded U.S. military presence and bars adversaries from bases or sensitive investments without American approval. Danish and Greenlandic leaders said it recognizes the kingdom’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Details remain limited. A State Department official said it provides permanent access, basing and overflight rights while prohibiting non-NATO bases. The announcement followed months of Trump threats to seize the territory by force.
