Japan defeated Fiji 20-15 on Saturday at Chichibunomiya Stadium to win the Pacific Nations Cup, ending a seven-year drought and dethroning the defending champions.
Tries from Mamoru Harada, Ben Gunter and substitute Samisoni Tua secured the victory. Fiji scored through Virimi Vakatawa and captain Tevita Ikanivere. Japan’s fitness told in the second half on a rain-slicked pitch.
Coach Eddie Jones called it a good step forward in defense. Canada took third place with a 19-16 win over the United States. It was Japan’s fourth title in the competition.
